I lost my job two weeks ago today.
I didn’t lose my job because I hated what I was doing, I loved what I was doing. I didn’t lose my job because I wasn’t making great money, my job paid great. I didn’t lose my job because I wasn’t good at it, I love what I do and it's a great career. Cyber Security is awesome.
I lost my job because I wanted to do something else (Bigger than me).
I lost my job because time is more important to me than money.
Here are a few other things that are more important than money:
  • Calmness
  • Excitement
  • Creativity
  • Connection
  • Love
  • Laughter
  • Possibility
  • Opportunity
  • and Time
While I am 10% concerned that I won’t be receiving a regular paycheck, I am 100% confident that I made the right decision on moving up. It’s only been a few days, and I feel different. I feel better. I feel free. Less email - and more female ( more time with my 5-year-old daughter) I have a great support system with my family, friends, colleges in I.T and vendors. They have all been supportive in this downtime.
While some of you may be interested to know more about how it happened for me. I’ve prepared a little Q&A and welcome other questions anytime.
  1. When did you know you wanted to leave your job? From the moment I received a negative feedback from others all the time and never saw a positive outlook on what we were doing. The loss of all hope.....never a good thing.
  2. Did becoming debt free help you make the decision? Absolutely. It was essential for us to be debt free first. It took consistent budgeting and a commitment to spend less. It didn’t happen overnight, but it was worth the wait. It took me 4+ years !!!
  3. I didn’t even know you had a job! What did you do? I had a fun. I love what I do as an ethical hacker and penetration tester. I never worked a day, because what I was doing was fun.
  4. What will you do if you can’t make money doing what you want to do? I’ll get another career or do whatever it takes to help support my family. I had to do it before, But if I fail, I will try again, if I fail harder, I will keep trying. I never give up, If you give up you truly fail....
  5. What are you most looking forward to in unemployment? Nothing - I plan on using my resources to start with a new company as soon as possible. I look forward to a new career in cybersecurity.
I will miss all the people I worked with and the bond that we all shared. I made great friends and did more in 1 year that most cybersecurity experts do in a lifetime. I wish them all the best and I hope that they all do well in their careers within the company. I hope that all the work I did will pay off for them and best of all physical years to come.
